It’s nearly holiday time and it will soon be the start of a new year. We all know that when it comes to preparing for the next term the “to-do” list can be long. So, we’ve collated some top tips to help you start fresh and fully prepared for the best term you’ve ever had at your school or college!
Pace
Remember, the new term is not a sprint, you can’t run all the way through to the end of term. Pacing is crucial. Ensure you take some time off and book something relaxing to do during the half term break. Take care of your wellbeing on an ongoing basis to avoid sickness and burnout.
Set Goals
A new year is a great time to think about what you want to achieve in the new term. Create a list of goals, write them down in your diary and make them a teaching priority. Just imagine how great it will feel to achieve them before term ends.
Reflect
If you don’t already keep a teaching journal or make notes, now is the time to start. Find what works for you and take a few minutes after each lesson to reflect on what worked, what didn’t and why. These notes will be essential in creating your next year’s lesson plans and ensure your best lessons are not lost in files.
Collaborate
There’s so much you can learn by working more closely with others. If you have an opportunity for collaborative working, take it whenever possible! Joint planning can mean a reduction in workload, fast learning and providing speedy solutions to any difficult situations. There’s no point of struggling alone when you can face challenges together.
Talk to others
Your colleagues won’t always notice when you’re struggling. Build strong relationships with them and talk about your concerns sooner rather than later. Don’t be afraid to admit when your workload gets too heavy.
Smile
Smile as much as you can and whenever you can. You’d be surprised at how a smile can help you with building strong and effective relationships with people you work with and students you teach.
Whether you’re new or experienced teacher, have a great first term in 2022!
